R.I.P. Grant McLennan

In tribute to Grant McLennan, who died last Saturday in his sleep at the age of 48, this is a list of my favorite songs of his, both solo and with THE GO-BETWEENS, along with my favorite lyric from each song.

  1. “Was There Anything I Could Do” (from 16 Lovers Lane)
“If you spend your life looking behind, you don’t see what’s up front”
  2. “Quiet Heart” (from 16 Lovers Lane)
“And what did I say to make you cry… it seems that no matter how far you’ve come you’ve always got further to go”
  3. “Bye Bye Pride” (from Tallulah)
“I didn’t know someone could be so lonely, didn’t know a heart could be tied up and held for ransom”
  4. “In the Core of the Flame” (from Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express)
“If the devil had seen your dress, he would’ve changed his name”
  5. “Streets of Your Town” (from 16 Lovers Lane)
“I ride your river under the bridge I take your boat out to the reach Cos I love that engine roar but I still don’t hnow what I’m here for.”
  6. “The Wrong Road” (from Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express)
“Lucky at cards, that’s an old lie Lucky in love, that’s how life ends”
  7. “Bachelor Kisses” (from Spring Hill Fair)
“Don’t believe what you’ve heard, faithful’s not a bad word”
  8. “Cattle and Cane” (from Before Hollywood)
“I recall a bigger brighter world A world of books And silent times in thought”
  9. “Lighting Fires” (from Fireboy and the U.S. version of Horsebreaker Star)
“I could tell by the flames burning in my veins it was you up there lighting fires”
  10. “Simone and Perry” (from Horsebreaker Star)
“Come see the paradise, if only for an hour… Make me feel I’m precious, make me feel I’m wanted”
