Suzanne Baran’s Top Ten — January 6

6 January 2008

Not just indie all the time…

  1. No Country for Old Men – (R)

    It’s worth all the hype.

  2. Sunset RubdownRandom Spirit Lover (Jagjaguwar)

Quite possibly one of the best albums of 2007.

  3. Major StarsMirror/Messenger (Drag City)

This band understands the meaning of pure old-school rock and roll jamming—without coming up for air. Strong vocals, guitar riffs and earth-shattering melodies take hold of the listener and don’t let go.

  4. The Savages – (R)

One of my favorite films of 2007; the writing is stellar and the cast makes the reality of elder care all too real.

  5. 1990s- Cookies (Rough Trade Records)

Check out “See You at the Lights.”

  6. A Place to Bury StrangersA Place to Bury Strangers (Killer Pimp)

This group’s versatile cry is majestic.

  7. ChromaticsNight Drive (Italians Do It Better)

    Sleek sounds with bite.

  8. YeasayerAll Hour Cymbals (We Are Free)

Brooklyn’s Yeasayer are the latest foray into David Byrne followers, who excel at putting a new twist into his polyrhythmic fits.

  9. Lotte LenyaLotte Lenya sings Kurt Weill (Sony BMG)

Pure brilliance in English and German—songs about Lenya’s return to Berlin after the devastation of World War II.

  10. Liars Liars (Mute Records)
    Beck meets The Chemical Brothers.

Comments

that is one great list!
‘no country’is classic coen bros.easily their best movie since ‘fargo.’best picture i’ve seen in years.
sadly, i haven’t seen ‘savages’, but i will; i adore laura linney.
as for the music, i, too, am a big fan of ‘suset rubdown.’ “random spirit lover” and last year’s “shut up, i’m dreaming” are both truly excellent.
“cookies” by ‘the 1990’s’ is amazing and i possess all ‘the major stars’”
cd’s along with ‘the liars.’
i sampled some of the other cd’s on your list that i do not have; i’ve just
ordered “lotte lenya sings kurt weil,”
‘yeasayer,’and ‘the chromatics’”nite”.
i’d like to recommend a cd for you to check out; it’s by a band named ‘takka takka’ called “we feel safer at night.”
love to hear your opinion.
