Suzanne Baran’s Top Ten — December 30

30 December 2007

Not just indie all the time…

  1. Division DayBeartrap Island (Division Day music)

Check out “Hurricane” and “Reversible” – not the standard 21st century indie rock band.

  2. Sunset RubdownRandom Spirit Lover (Jagjaguwar)

The band returns with a smashing LP. Quite possibly one of the best album releases of the year.

  3. Major StarsMirror/Messenger (Drag City)

This band understands the meaning of pure old-school rock and roll jamming without coming up for air. Strong vocals, guitar riffs and earth-shattering melodies take hold of the listener and don’t let go.

  4. The Savages – (R)

One of my favorite films of 2007, the writing is stellar and the cast makes the reality of elder care all-too real.

  5. 1990s- Cookies (Rough Trade Records)

Check out “See You At the Lights”—it’s such pop fun.

  6. Radiohead In Rainbows (no label)

    An incredibly seamless work.

  7. Chromatics Night Drive (Italians Do It Better)

    Sleek sounds with bite.

  8. Yeasayer All Hour Cymbals (We Are Free)

Imaginative, anything but droll, versatile, replete with fresh new sounds. Listening to “2080” on repeat.

  9. Whiteshoes & the Couples CompanyWhiteshoes & the Couples Company (Minty Fresh)

Smooth disco, bossa nova, jazz, 80s pop and soft rock melded into one incredible work.

  10. Liars Liars (Mute Records)

This art-rock trio from New York are innovative and sound like Beck meets The Chemical Brothers.
