Here’s a list of some of my faves from the past decade. Though they’re not ranked in order, I suppose I’ll make an exception for Love performing Forever Changes live in 2003 (yeah, yeah, I know the original album was recorded 32 years ago).
Honorable Mention:
Rob Dickinson Fresh Wine for the Horses
The Damned Grave Disorder
The Stranglers Norfolk Coast
Why? Elephant Eyelash
Caribou Andorra
Scott Walker The Drift
The Polyphonic Spree The Fragile Army
Radiohead Kid A
The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me
The Shins Chutes Too Narrow
Love – The Forever Changes Concert (Live) (Snapper)
For Against – Never Been (Words on Music)
Thee More Shallows – More Deep Cuts (Turn)
The Pernice Brothers – The World Won’t End (Ashmont)
Doves – Lost Souls (Caroline Astralwerks)
Idlewild – 100 Broken Windows (EMI)
Leatherface – Horsebox (BYO)
Stew – Guest Host (Smile)
The Damned – So Who’s Paranoid (English Channel)
Blonde Redhead – 23 (4AD)
Comments
hello greg,
seeing as i own every cd on your list and knowing that i love everyone of them, i’d be stupid to say anything other than “that’s a great top 10.”
also, your ‘honorable mentions’ are quite honorable.

Hi Ed,
Wow! What are the odds of that? Considering our similar tastes, do you have some titles to recommend that I may not have?
Thanks,
Greg

hey greg,
here’s a few titles that i found quite addictive:
lightning dust—infinite light
big pink————a brief history of love
black cab———-call signs
oneida—————-rated o
the bomb————-speed is everything
fever ray————s/t
neko case————-middle cyclone
dawes——————north hills
levon helm————electric dirt
xx———————-xx
dirty projectors——-bitte orca
richard hawley——-truelove’s gutter
steve earle———-townes
animal collective—-merriweather post pavillion
flaming lips———-embryonic
japanroids————-post nothing
avett bros————i and love and you
2009 was a musically great year;
the reason we appear to have similar taste might be because most of my cd purchases are influenced by the fabulous music magazine “the big take-over.”
anyways, have an awesome new year and let me echo what i tell anyone with taste in music:
“I HATE ‘AMERICAN IDOL!’”

BTW,
obviously all the recommendations above are from 2009.
i’ll have to get back to you on a decade of albums, although it would probably include everything by ‘the decemberists’ and ‘neko case.’

Excellent. Thanks Ed! I’ll scope out what I can. Thanks for reading and sharing. Have a happy new year and tuneful 2010!

thanks greg,
back atcha!
btw, the “popmatters” website listed “american idol” as the #5 best show of the decade.
my response to that is that “popmatters” doesn’t really matter.
also, the comment i sent to that particular critic? will probably never see the light of day.
