  1. Evangelicals – The Evening Descends (Dead Oceans)

    Just as wild as last year’s debut album, but more refined. Exciting and mysterious pop/rock from Oklahoma.

  2. Iris DeMent – Infamous Angel (Warner Bros)

    Her 1992 debut – I was listening to this again the other day, and it’s as breathtaking as ever.

  3. Mahjongg – Kontpab (K)

    This enigmatic African-influenced Chicago/Columbia art-funk band’s second LP is more streamlined than their first – less showy but no less fun.

  4. John Anderson – Eye of the Hurricane (Collectors Choice)

    One of the great new reissues of his classic country (with touches of rock and blues) music: five of his albums from the ‘80s.

  5. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – B-Sides and Rarities (Mute)

    I finally bought this three-disc set. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I’m really enjoying looking at it, remembering all the great stuff on it that I’ve heard before and imagining what the rest will sound like.
