Dave Heaton’s Top Ten — January 6

6 January 2008

Currently listening to…

Music, old and new, that I’ve been listening to or thinking about lately. Five albums and five songs.

  1. Bob Dylan and The BandThe Basement Tapes (Columbia)

I’ve been listening to Dylan a lot since seeing the excellent film I’m Not There, and especially this, after being haunted by Jim James’s amazing version of “Going to Acapulco,” in one of the film’s most riveting scenes.

  2. Kimya DawsonHidden Vagenda (K)

Listening to Kimya Dawson more since seeing Juno, as well. Though the movie is irritating in some ways, and charming in others, and the music is used in a wallpaper-like, throw-it-on-every-scene way, it’s still nice to hear so much great Dawson music in a film that people are seeing.

  3. Wu-Tang Clan8 Diagrams (Universal)

One of my favorite albums of 2007… more proof that the so-called ‘decline’ of the Wu is nonsense.

  4. John ColtraneBallads (Impulse)

My go-to quiet-evening or quiet-morning album these days.

  5. Pants YellAllison Statton (Soft Abuse)

Loving the horns and other little touches they’ve added to their sound, plus the more forceful drumming.

  6. Aarktica – “Seventy Jane”
  7. Buzzcocks – “Why Can’t I Touch It?”
  8. Def Jef – “Give It Here”
  9. Low – “Just Like Christmas”
  10. “Auld Lang Syne”

Comments

I know nothing about Pants Yell (your #5 choice), but I love the fact that they named their album after the singer of Young Marble Giants. I bet they sound nothing like them, though.
