The Dears @ TLA 1/17/07

4 months after playing a WXPN-sponsored “Free at Noon” show at World Cafe Live, THE DEARS came back to headline the TLA. Hot on the heels of their terrific but largely overlooked newest album Gang of Losers, I was very much looking forward to this show as they’ve been a perennial favorite of mine for years now and also because I haven’t seen them play a full set in almost 2 years. The last 2 occasions I’d seen them play were the shortened World Cafe Live set and before that a short set on the main stage of the Siren Festival in the summer of 2005. They played well, but something was missing on this evening. The set felt a bit rote as they played about half of the songs on Gang of Losers followed by 3 or 4 songs from their 2004 album No Cities Left. After that, they went back to playing the rest of the songs from Gang of Losers. While I enjoyed seeing all of the new songs being played live, some of which I’d never seen them do before, it felt like they were just going through the motions. Of course, being the formidable live band that they are, a Dears show where they’re going through the motions is still a way better show than most bands can give. Still, perhaps the lackluster feeling I got from the show was due to the fact that the TLA was mostly empty. Then again, they absolutely and completely blew me away when I saw for the first time 3 years ago playing to a mostly empty room at Maxwells on a weeknight, so perhaps this was just a bum show. Furthermore, while a large portion of the crowd seemed to leave after opening band THE ANNUALS, several others fled during The Dears set. Granted, it was a cold, Wednesday night, but it makes me wonder why the Dears were even booked there. They would’ve packed a smaller venue like the First Unitarian Church, but at the larger, more impersonal TLA, they tanked. They clearly don’t have the audience here to headline a venue like that and that’s a shame because they’re a great band. While I was a bit disappointed, I nevertheless eagerly await their next appearance in town as I hope the choice of venue and atmosphere is better-suited for them.

The Dears @ TLA 1/17/07

I only caught the last song of the opening set by The Annuals as we got there a bit late. While they seemed to draw a considerably larger audience than the headliners did (perhaps because of recent blogger attention), I wasn’t impressed at all with what I saw. They seemingly had about a dozen people on stage including 2 drummers and a lead singer that banged on yet another drum as he was singing. It was frankly a bit of an annoying, cacophonous mess. Sure they had the intensity and the energy of a band like fellow Canadians THE ARCADE FIRE, but they lack the strong material that amazing band has. Perhaps with time they’ll get better.

Matthew,

I agree w/ your assement of this show plus I have some comments of my own. Yes, I was there (upstairs) with some other music snobs to see The Dears because their “Gang of Losers” was one of the best cds of ‘06. If you heard some loud clapping or shouting it was me but otherwise you are correct in saying it was dead in there! Why I don’t know but here are my possible explainations. 1) This is The Dears’ first great cd. We had a copy of “No Cities Left” WAY and I mean WAY before there was an official cd to be found in America. I put it on my “honorable mention” list that year because of a couple stand out songs and potential. When doves sold out the TLA they had “Lost Souls” & “Last Broadcast” on their resume. 2) If it was the cold or that it was a Wednesday night then shame on others for not coming out to show support. I drove my usual almost 2 hours after work and then again to go back home. I didn’t mind a bit. 3) Any normal human being w/ musical taste was enjoying the first act of the evening, Pilot Speed. They were pretty cool and I am sure they said they were from Toronto Canada. But then it all went wrong. “Not impressed at all” with The Annuals (from N. Carolina btw) was a political way to put it! Since I am not running for President right now I will just come out and say the truth – they f*cking sucked! The only reason to put them in the same sentence w/ Arcade Fire would be to mention that The Annuals fell just short of being worse than the band that opened up for Arcade Fire about a year ago. Who is that? God, I hate to even mention their name but it was Man Man. Never in my life did I witness a bunch of useless noise. Blog that you train jumping geek jazz? rock? hippster wanna be losers. Sorry to go off but it is my duty to alert the world. No wonder some people left after their set. Probably had to puke all over South Street. If you are planning on seeing the Kaiser Chiefs this year you have now been warned because somehow The Annuals are slotted as one of the opening acts. WTF?! Before I go I must mention that we, as men, were enchanted by the keyboardest Valarie. We thought she was hot beforehand but that dress drove us crazy. Hey now.

Thanks for commenting Chris. We missed Pilot Speed and most of The Annuals’ set, but yeah I thought they were pretty awful. I was only being nice because well, they appeared to be really young and they can only get better (hopefully). Nevertheless, I have no idea why they’ve gotten such glowing reviews on the blogs. It must be that they’re from Canada, the hot new indie rock destination, or something. Oh and I’ve never listened to or see Man Man live, so no comment there. They seem to have gained a lot of popularity since that time a few years ago when they opened for The Arcade Fire, though, even making the cover of the Weekly recently.

As for The Dears, I didn’t hear No Cities Left until it was released in the U.S. (in late 2004) and I have to disagree with you a bit. I love Gang of Losers, but I actually prefer No Cities Left, which I think is their 1st great album (End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, their 1st album, is only ok).

As for Kaiser Chiefs, I loved the first record and they’re great live, but I’m a bit worried about this new record. The new single “Ruby” that I’ve heard on WXPN a bunch of times now really sucks.

Oh and yeah Valerie is definitely a hottie!
