Nine Inch Nails Supports PETA

7 February 2006

TRENT REZNOR narrates a new PETA expose video that depicts the horrors cats and dogs undergo in the Chinese underground fur trade. At one point he says, “If you buy or wear fur, you must share the blame for the suffering of these cats and dogs. If you know someone who wears fur, please, show them this video.”

While it may be a very worthwhile cause, this turn of events has really proven Reznor to be a hypocrite. How many NINE INCH NAILS videos show him wearing leather pants, leather shorts, leather boots, etc.? I also seem to remember some pictures from Spin way back when with him wearing a fur coat of some sort. Whichever way you, uh, slice it, it is ridiculous for Reznor to put forth this new ideology in such staunch terms (and as the voice of such a hardcore organization) when he has been connected to the black-leather-badass S&M aesthetic for so long. Ok, so maybe all that leather was vegan, but it still seems like just another aspect of the clean-and-sober, born-again attitude that he’s been spouting ever since the release of With Teeth—surely the worst album in NIN’s history!

Anyways, I don’t know how Reznor would justify his past fashion statements, and I honestly don’t care. But it seems that a public figure would want to explain themselves when pulling such a public 180°, if only to give their new views better reception. And if Reznor is so obsessed with animal welfare, then in honor of all the dogs and cats that have been slaughtered, he should segue into “Closer” by asking the audience not to wear animals, but to f*** like them.

Thanks! I really hope this doesn’t mean Trent’s a vegan now too…

Kristen Sollee    2006-02-08 03:37    #

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Kristen Sollee    2006-02-12 03:37    #

So your saying someone can’t change because they used to wear leather???

— Robert    2006-02-18 19:21    #

Of course not. My only problem is that when someone, especially a public figure, becomes a poster child for a cause, and there are some obvious conflicts with that cause in said person’s past, it would be useful to come right out and own up to them. Otherwise, it just seems hypocritical, even when done with the best intentions, and it takes away from the cause itself.

Listening to Trent Reznor lecture us on cruelty to animals is like listening to Madonna preaching spirituality. (Fortunately, the only one who took her seriously was Britney Spears.) But then again pop stars and dictators tend to find it much easier to empathize with animals than people. Also, now that Reznor is Mr. Sensitive shouldn’t he have considered the effect of his comments on the livelihoods of the Chinese working class?

if you were losing you’re musical edge as rapidly as trent you might try your hand in activism as well.

What he wore in the past is of no concern if he embraces these beliefs now.i do want to know if continues to wear leather however. That would matter.
And I do think With Teeth was bad,but I honestly believe he thinks it’s good.I don’t think he trying to be something he’s not…hell,he’s getting old. He’s entitled to a little “ler’s all get sober!”.
But if he turns born again Christian,he’s on his own!

You need your art spoon feed to you! What’s wrong with wearing leather even if you are against animal cruelty! Purest, provincial attitudes like yours are stagnant and belong old dried up and sh*tty farty like your breath. Go back to church and suuc some CEO off…

Wow! I think all of you are too busy criticizing and taking stabs at NIN/Trent’s latest album, than the issue itself.
Trent has always been an animal lover and has dogs/cats. His golden retriever, Maise, died from a horrible accident in Columbus, Ohio while he was on tour. She jumped over a ledge not knowing that there wasn’t ground on the other side and fell a great distance. Her spine had broken and she had to be euthanized. Any person that has gone through the heart breaking act of euthanizing a pet, that they loved as much as family,.. is indeed an animal lover. That is why he would draw attention to animal cruelty.. because of the suffering he saw his own pet go through. Can you imagine coming off stage and finding out your dog had been injured and not only that but you would only have a few moments left with her? She crushed her spine and through all that pain she was still trying to move her body to go to Trent. Now that’s heart breaking!
Let me guess.. this was written during one of those heavy flow days, right? Get your facts straight before you judge someone the next time!
And about his new album. The problem with the new album is that it wasn’t overplayed to death by MTV..that is why you have a hard time understanding any of it.
Not everyone needs the equivalent of a Dr. Seuss book infront of them to understand a relevant point.. or unrelevant in your case. I think you are doing a fine job “taking away from the cause” to worry about Trent’s intentions.

Hmmm…
My point was about Trent wearing fur and leather publicly and then later lecturing about cruelty towards animals, it has nothing to do with his being an ‘animal lover’ or not. So I don’t know what ‘facts’ I need to get straight here. This is clearly not a fact-based piece, its just opinions.

As for With Teeth, I’m not alone in the opinion that its incredibly weak in comparison with his previous work. Seems to me MTV played the s**t out of it too…

As far as ‘taking away from the cause,’ I wouldn’t dare think for a second that anything I say is worthwhile enough to change anyone’s opinion or contribute in a positive or negative way to any cause or movement.

And the most maddening of all – How dare you assume I’m a biological woman and therefore experience menstruation!

Ummm, Kristen, is there something you haven’t been telling us?

Mick Lewis    2006-07-07 10:42    #

All I’m saying is, you never know…

Kristen Sollee    2006-07-07 19:50    #

I like cindy’s assertion that in order to be designated as an animal lover, one must only euthanize their pet. if i were to euthanize cindy, would i then be a cindy-lover?

Bill,

Please remove the pancake make-up from your lips after you have fully tongue bathed Kristen’s crusty Goth arse.

Feel better now?
Good…

Now this thread was about a Celeb bringing some publicity to an animal rights cause after the fact that he himself probably wore animal related clothing.

I think that as people age they become more aware of their actions. Maybe Mr. Reznor is one of them.
Anyway, I think the animal rights movement is full of pious asses like yourself.

Keep it up you will win no favor from the masses.

Kristen , maybe you should invest your time and efforts into some more to your liking perhaps maybe you should become a “Fluffer” in the porn industry. It’s easy, as you have been sucking the rod of such so called hip causes. Besides your amateur writings for this corporate slit rag does nothing for you.

How about it?? Let’s wipe some of that black lipstick on some greasy corporate dipstick?

Oh I see you already have….

— Rudy Ray Moore    2006-07-08 07:33    #

It’s kind of exciting that something so amateur could inspire such venom! I just wish the critiques could be based in reality.

How is Jack Rabid’s Big Takeover corporate?

How do you know I’m not a fluffer already?

How is dissing Trent and animal activists hip?

Why do I even respond to you crazies! Other bloggers at least get the common courtesy of intelligent commentary minus the juvenile dissing…

Kristen Sollee    2006-07-08 08:26    #

Cindy, you and your boyfriend Rudy should come to a goth club with me and Kristen. I’ll lend you my leathers.

What does asking the people of this world not to support the trade and slaughter of pet cats and dogs (some have collars in the video) have to do with wearing leather? You cannot make wearable leather out of cat/dog hides. What Trent wears was probably cow that someone had steaks, hamburgers from in Argentina, since that is where most of the clothing leather and beef comes from. I am not a PETA supporter in most cases, but it sickens me to see what China is doing to animals that we look upon as family members here. Trent is a big animal lover, but I cannot believe he would condone some of the extremist acts of PETA, i.e. the animals being picked up to be adopted out and then slaughtered in the van before they got out of town in Virginia last year. Oh, and being clean from drugs, does not mean being born again, its just that he is clean, sober, healthy and thinking again.

— Anu Barnes    2006-07-18 00:39    #

valid point-you don’t have to be anti-leather to be anti-fur.i am,but that’s aside from the point.
and i really don’t like the album with teeth-to me it sems oddly main stream and bland.but,so what? trent seems to be happy.if he has to be morbidly depressed to write the sort of music i relate to,then i’d rather he be happy and write music i don’t listen to.
the story about trent’s dog is tragic, but proves absolutely nothing.but yes,i believe he’s always been an animal lover.
and actually,i believed in animal rights long before i became a vegetarian 9 years ago. you don’t have to be a vegetarian who only wears pleather to be honestly concerned about animals…it just helps.
