The British Are Coming!

5 February 2008

I have returned! I must apologize for the lack of updates on my part, but I’ve been swamped with non-music related (read: boring and mundane) obligations. Moreover, there wasn’t much going on in the world of music that excited me enough to want to let the world know about it.

However, for all my hard work I treated myself to a trip across the Pond to Jolly Ole England. I had some beer, ate some chips (no fish for me, thanks), chatted with some mates, and, of course, discovered some great new bands. The following is a list of bands I think everyone should know about before they blow up and the whole world discovers them.

First is KATE NASH. Kate’s blowing up on both sides of the Atlantic, and if “the UK’s answer to REGINA SPEKTOR” sounds good to you, then I’d say you need to listen to Kate Nash. She’s got smart, heartfelt lyrics and piano-driven songs that are fun to listen to. (Myspace)

I saw KID HARPOON live in London and it was an eclectic, energetic show. Plus, the kids were going nuts for him, (Kid Harpoon is TOM HULL) which is always a good sign. I’m not sure how to describe his music, but it fits under the category of “fun British music” without a doubt! (Myspace)

Another great band I saw while abroad in Glasgow was CORRECTO, which features FRANZ FERDINAND’s PAUL THOMSON on the drums. Though their current recordings are a little rough, (Paul admitted that they rarely have time to practice) their fun, short pop songs have a lot of potential. (Myspace)

Another British band worth noting is THE FILTHY YOUTH from London. They’re led by ED WESTWICK, who you may or may not know as “Chuck” from the CW cult teen favorite “Gossip Girl.” But don’t let that cloud your judgment: they’re not a mainstream pop-rock band but instead are heavily influenced by THE LIBERTINES and are certainly ones to watch. Other British bands worth checking out:
Captain Dangerous
Look See Proof
Clocks
Lightspeed Champion
Once a Thief
Left.Right+Centre

As for bands from the States, there aren’t many I’m into at the moment, but there is one band I’m excited to see live and hear more from: THE MORNING BENDERS. Their blissful, sunny pop (they are from California after all!) makes me happy and warms me up on these wintry days. What more could you ask for? (Myspace)

Check back soon for more tips and gig reviews!

The best two bands in the UK at the moment IMHO are Exit Calm and The Boxer Rebellion. The guitar player from Exit Calm is from another planet, unreal! Both bands in a fairer world would be HUGE. Thanks for these other leads – will check out!

I’ve heard the Lightspeed Champion album and although it has absolutely the worst cover art of the year (‘course, it’s only February) the music therein is intriguing. I’ve heard a few Kate Nash tracks and found it highly likable. Looking forward to checking out some of these other bands. Thanks!
